Sam married Anna after George was killed. Bertha was about 5 yrs. old so he was pretty much the only father she knew. I know from a letter that Sam had a brother named Albert.
The 1900 census of Brazil Township, Indiana shows a Samuel Stackels with a stepson named Frank T. Bitterman and a stepdaughter named Bertha E. Bitterman. According to Geneva (Amason) Vest, Bertha said that Samuel Stickles do not speak english very well. Assumption is that this census was a mistake due to language.
